These 28 work from home jobs encompass phone jobs, non-phone, and self-employed gigs, so if you need to work remotely, you’ll find something here.
If you haven’t worked from home before, imagine this:
Having a couple extra hours each weekday to do whatever you want, because you have no commute. And what if your weekends weren’t filled with chores you had no time for during the week? Your quality of life would instantly improve, right?
That was my experience, and it could be yours too. Because work from home jobs are now commonplace in almost every industry.
It’s not only expensive for you to commute, but employers pay a fortune in office space and utilities. That’s why work from home jobs are much easier to come by now, than even five years ago.
When I started working from home, I instantly saved hundreds of dollars (and loads of time) each month.
- I fill my gas tank once a week now, instead of every other day.
- I cut expenses like lunches, tolls, work clothes, and wear and tear on my car.
- My stress level went down when I didn’t need to commute.
- Working from home meant I was close by in case my kids needed me.
- Without a 45-minute commute, I was suddenly able to see my kids after school games.
You may have encountered a lot of click bait – ads that promise great jobs and then either don’t deliver, or ask for a fee. None of the jobs here require that. I’ve included a few ways to make money from home where some training would really shorten the time it takes to earn a full-time salary, but that’s totally optional.
All of the jobs here are legitimate work from home jobs hiring now. So if you need to learn how to make money online without paying anything, you’ll find something here.
So what are you looking for?
- Full or part time remote jobs, working for a large employer?
- Or maybe you’d prefer to work for an employer where you work online, but not on the phone.
- Or the idea of your own business sounds exciting. One you can start on a shoestring, and have no income ceiling.
- Or, maybe you’re looking for part time work from home jobs. You need income, but your schedule is just crazy. Some days you can work from 9am to 11am, and the next day it’s just not possible. If your time is unpredictable right now, you might want to earn money doing some simple surveys.
If you need to work from home, this post will show you how to make money online without paying anything.

Self-Employed Work From Home Jobs
These work from home jobs could be the most interesting of all. Will you rake in thousands of dollars your first month? No, but here’s the upside:
- You can decide what you want to do, and finally do it.
- You can grow it as fast or as slow as you want, and be satisfied knowing you’re building something of your own.
- You call the shots. You put the effort in where you want, when you want.
- There’s no income ceiling when you work for yourself.
Blogging
Here’s one thing common among almost all bloggers, whether you’re making $100/month or $100,000/month:
- Nobody knows how to do it when they start.
But blogging is one of the few work from home jobs you can choose to do today, and actually begin tonight.
I could recommend a few expensive courses to take, but really, to get your blog up and running takes about 15 minutes. I have a free tutorial that walks you through getting your own domain (site) name, and has your blog ready to go in less time than it takes you to make lunch.
When I think of how many nights I wasted browsing through Facebook, when I could have been building my own site, I wish I’d started much sooner.
Will it cost money? Yes, it costs about $75 for the first year, and that’s to own your site. It’s not a free site that your host can decide to take down anytime. It’s a site you can decide to monetize however you want.
If you’re even considering your own blog, check out these two resources that’ll help you out:
-
- My tutorial, that’ll walk you through getting up and running.
- My 7 day free email course (below), describes things like content creation, attracting subscribers, and how to start monetizing your site. It’s what I wish I had when I started.
Freelance Writing
Freelance writing is nothing like being a reporter, or a columnist. You don’t need a journalism degree. If you can write coherently, you can make money freelancing. And as your skills will develop, you can graduate from $30-$50 per article, to $300+ depending on the size of the piece.
You’d want to choose a niche that you can specialize in, because the more work you complete, the more you’ll position yourself as an expert in that area. That’s when you can start to increase your rates.
Here’s one way to break into freelance writing:
- Produce some writing samples. A perfect way to do that is to create your own blog, then add some solid blog posts in your niche.
- Once you’ve produced some content on your blog, check out some of the job boards, like the ProBlogger Board, or Blogging Pro. Use your own blog content for writing samples.
- When you’ve completed a handful of jobs, now start to reach out to some bigger blogs than your own. The pay will vary, but the connections you make will start expanding your network, and raising your pay.
The best place I’ve seen, hands down, to learn the ropes of freelance writing, is Holly Johnson’s course, Earn More Writing. It’s a combination of text and audio that’s full of real-world experience. And when you take her course, you’ll also get access to her Facebook group which is another huge value. She’s active in it literally every day, offering advice and encouragement.
Virtual Assistant
You might be surprised at how many marketable skills you’ve developed. If you’ve worked in an office, or have developed some skill in any online tasks, why not turn them into a work from home job? Many businesses – bloggers for example – need to focus their efforts on content creation and marketing.
But they still need other things done, like simple updates, email processing, social media scheduling or creating graphics. You can make a very comfortable living doing these tasks from home.
Kayla Sloan started working as a VA just in 2014, and in just a few years, has managed to scale her business to $10,000 per month. If you can picture yourself making $10,000 per month from home in the next few years, check out her course, TenKVA.
Proofreading
Was English your favorite subject in school? Do you read articles and notice grammatical errors?
If you like scanning text and proofreading, this could be right up your alley. There’s so much content being produced these days, that a lot of companies outsource this function. So if you’ve got a sharp eye, you can earn a steady income proofreading text.
If you’re not sure if this would be a good fit, check out Caitlin Pyle’s site, Proofread Anywhere where she provides all the details, and even a training course that’ll get you started.
Work When You Want, Doing Surveys
Businesses need your opinion about the products they make, because they want to continue making products that sell. Anything from the type of flooring you prefer, to sneakers you’d buy. Or where you’d go to buy them.
And they need your opinion enough, that they’ll pay you for it.
Surveys are probably the most flexible work from home job. They’re tailored for the person who’s time might be unpredictable. Maybe you can work an hour today, but not at all tomorrow.
Here’s what I love about surveys:
- There’s no application process. You just sign up.
- Do them whenever you want, according to your schedule.
- Do them anywhere. In bed, on the couch, on your lunch break. From any device.
One Tip for Taking Surveys:
Companies will do surveys on anything from puppies to pizza. They’ll often look for people from a certain demographic, depending on the product. So in order to qualify for enough surveys to earn consistently, I’ve signed up for several sites. Each one of these is free to join, and if there’s not a current survey in one, there’s bound to be one in another.
Here are some of the best work from home surveys I’ve tried:
Inbox Dollars
Last year, Inbox Dollars paid out over 50 million dollars to survey takers.
In fact, they pay you your first $5 dollars just for signing up. The main way to earn through Inbox Dollars is to fill out surveys. But you can also play all sorts of games, like card games, word games, or strategy games and get paid while you play. Or if you use their toolbar for your searches you’ll earn money just for doing the normal searches you’d be doing anyway.
It’s one of the easier survey sites to use. Inbox Dollars will also pay you to refer friends. For every friend you refer, you’ll earn 10% of what they earn.
Pinecone Research
Pinecone Research is owned by the large survey company, Nielsen. Pinecone’s main purpose is to do product testing, so they usually want consumer opinions on things that haven’t been released yet. So it’s common for them to send you a product to test, and then ask your opinion.
There’s no confusion about what you’ll earn – it’s a flat fee of $3 per survey.
Here’s how you’ll earn money:
Pinecone will issue points as you complete questionnaires about the merchandise they send to you. Once you accumulate points, then you’ll redeem them for cash.
Like many survey companies, Pinecone usually targets a particular demographic depending on the product they’re working with. So if your profile information doesn’t happen to match a particular survey, they’ll let you know.
This is why I’ve used several different sites so I’ll have surveys to take most weeks.
Survey Junkie
Really simple to sign up for and use, Survey Junkie has over 5 million users. It works on a simple points system, where you just convert your points to cash, then they’ll deposit the cash in your Paypal account.
Here’s how it works:
The payout threshold is 1,000 points, which equates to $10. They’re short surveys, and most bring in somewhere between 100 and 200 points. So it doesn’t take long to reach the threshold and get paid. I’ve used Survey Junkie to earn money while sitting in the car waiting for my daughter at soccer practice.
Swagbucks
Swagbucks is really simple also, but it just works a bit different. For each survey, you earn ‘Swagbucks’, or SB’s as they call them. Then you just convert your Swagbucks to cash, gift cards, or have it deposited into your PayPal account.
Swagbucks is one of the more established survey sites, and the Better Business Bureau rates them as A+.
And if you like a little variety, they feature several other ways to earn in addition to surveys.
- You can watch short marketing videos.
- You can earn cash for doing normal shopping through their app.
- You can earn also by doing searches. (They value what consumers search for).
Final Points
Well, there’s 28 ideas to help you escape that cubicle. If there’s one thing I’ve learned working office jobs for large companies, it’s this:
You can struggle leaving at the crack of dawn, commute in all kinds of weather, and bust your butt for years. And with one change in management, your job can be eliminated in a heartbeat.
It’s never been more possible to earn a living on your terms. You don’t need a bachelors or a masters to make a comfortable living at home. In your PJ’s.
When you earn your paycheck, you’re exchanging more than the 8 hours at your desk.
- You’re giving up the time to commute to and from work.
- You’re probably not being paid for that mandatory lunch hour.
- You’re giving up money spent on clothes, lunches, tolls and other things.
- You’re taking on the stress of being rushed at home.
