Over 150 million monthly users, and over 2 billion searches each month, make Pinterest one of the best ways to drive traffic to your site. And Board Booster is one of the most effective tools to pin your content around the clock. So if you can master Board Booster, you can leverage those 2 billion searches, driving free traffic to your site.
Whether you’ve recently started your blog, or you’re a seasoned pro, it seems like there’s always something new to learn. It tough constantly learning new apps!
So once I sat down and learned how to use Board Booster, I made a point of documenting each step. Board Booster has taken so much manual, time consuming work off my plate, that I had to share it with you.
So, check out the steps below and you too can master Board Booster
Imagine this scenario:
You’ve poured your heart into this great blog post and then you create a great looking pin for it. You log into Pinterest and pin it, then you’re off to do the other 10 things on your to-do list.
While you’re busy taking care of other things, 400 other people also pin to that same board. So what happens to your pin? It’s now pushed so far down that board that anyone viewing the board will never see your great looking pin – and never come to your site.
Who has time to sit and pin content all day long so people at various times, and in various time zones will actually see it? Not many people.
And that’s exactly why Board Booster was created. It’s like your own virtual assistant sitting there and pinning your content all hours of the day – and night.
So while hundreds of people in Pittsburgh or Miami or London, or Panama are scrolling through Pinterest, your content is being pinned.
That’s the magic that Board Booster provides. By spreading out your pinning throughout the day and night, your content gets in front of many more people. And you can focus on your other nine to-dos.

This is an easy to follow tutorial on how you can get yourself setup. Even if you’ve never seen BoardBooster, you should be able to use this post to get your first board setup.

Before we go through the steps, here’s what the general idea is:
In Pinterest, you have your own personal boards. Then if you join group boards, you’ll see them appear on your profile screen also.
So if you want to automatically pin to those group boards, you’d have to determine three things:
- What pins do you want to schedule?
- What boards should they go to?
- What times should they be pinned?
The way BoardBooster handles all this is, it creates one board, called a “secret” board for each board that you want to schedule to. This secret board will show up on your profile screen but only you will be able to see it – no other Pinterest members.
BoardBooster will name this secret board the same name as the board you’re scheduling to, except that it will put a “dash” in front of it. The secret board will be like a holding place for the pins waiting to pin.
For example, if you wanted to schedule pins to go to a group board called “Saving Money”, you’d set up a secret board in Board Booster that’ll be called “-Saving Money” (notice the dash in front).
Then you’d add whatever pins you want to automatically go to the Saving Money board, to your secret board, called -Saving Money. The pins would now be doled out from the -Saving Money board to the Saving Money board according to the schedule you specify in BoardBooster.
It may sound a little crazy at first, but I’m sure that once you setup your first one, and see the way it works, you’ll zip through any others.

Ok, ready to set up our first board?
Once you login to BoardBooster, here’s the screen you’ll see.
The first thing we’ll do is create our first “secret” board and set it up so it’ll begin to pin automatically for you. Then we’ll check out a few of the other features.
First go to the top menu and click on Pinning Tools, then Scheduler.
Now, Board Booster will display your existing group boards (below). Click the red box labeled “Add boards”.
Now (below) you’ll see a list of the group boards you’re a member of. Scroll down to the one you want to start a schedule for and click the box to the left of it. For this example, I’m going to use the board, “Blogging Pros Group Board”.
Then click the green “Continue” box down at the bottom.
Now (below) you’ll be prompted to select the days and times we want our pins scheduled.
For “Frequency” you can leave the default as “Multiple pins per day”.
For “Time Settings”, if you’re setting this up initially, you can leave it set to “Basic”. Here’s why:
The “Advanced” time setting, will give you two extra options.
- You can select two windows of time, which lets you be more specific about the times.
- You can select certain times for weekdays and different times for the weekends.
But if you’re setting this board up now, you don’t really know yet, what the best times of the day are to pin to this particular board. Once you set it up, and let it pin for a week or so, then you can log back in and select Reports > Best Time to Pin and Board Booster will show you the best times of day to pin for this board. Then you can go back and select the Advanced time settings and set your pins for those recommended times. We just don’t have that information yet. So stick with Basic for now.
For “Pins Per Day” be aware of the maximum pins per day for that particular board and don’t exceed that.
For “Spread Between” – remember, we don’t initially know the best times to pin to this board, so I’d leave the default times. Then in a few days you can go to Reports > Best Time to Pin and use the suggested times.
Ok, so once you select “Multiple pins per day”, “Basic”, “Pins per day”, now click the green Submit box.
When you click the green Submit box, it’ll take a minute while Board Booster is creating the new secret board on Pinterest for you. When it’s done, you’ll see the screen below:
The screen above is a confirmation that the secret board is created, and it’s telling you what we just went over in the last step – that you can go back later and edit the settings. We’ll show how to do that later.
Click on the green “Got it” box.
So here’s what we’ve done so far:
- We selected one Pinterest group board where we want to schedule pins to go out automatically.
- From Board Booster, we created one “secret board” that will hold the scheduled pins. Board Booster added that secret board to your Pinterest profile and named it the same name as your group board, except that it has a “dash” in front of the name.
- Whatever future secret boards you create, they’ll always be the same name as the regular board, except with a dash in front of the name. And when you look at your Pinterest profile, your secret boards will usually be displayed at the bottom of your screen, below your regular group boards.
Now there’s one more step to get your pins to start pinning.
Right now, your new secret board is added to your Pinterest profile but it’s empty.
So we need to go to Pinterest and just pin whatever pins we want to schedule to that new secret board. Once they are pinned to the secret board, they’ll pin according to your schedule.
Ok, let’s go over to Pinterest.
I scroll to the bottom of my Pinterest profile, and here is the new secret board next to an existing board:
If you don’t see your new secret board, refresh your screen and then it should appear.
See how the new secret board, “-Blogging Pros Group Board” shows no pins yet?
Also, notice the dashes in front of the names.
Now, just go to your personal Pinterest board and pin whatever pins you’d like to schedule, to this new secret board and you’re all set! The pins will start pinning according to your BoardBooster schedule.
And whatever other boards you’d like to schedule pins to, just repeat the same process:
- In BoardBooster, create a secret board. Board Booster will add it to you Pinterest profile.
- In Pinterest, add the pins you want scheduled to that secret board.
Other Board Booster Features
Here’s one setting that I always go back and adjust once I create a new board:
Since I just created a schedule for the board called Blogging Pros Group Board, I can now see it in the schedule (below).
Click on the new board, then click the red icon that looks like a gear (below).
Notice below, there’s now an Advanced settings box down at the bottom. Select that to open it.
Below, you can see the Advanced Settings.
I like to adjust the Pin selection method to “Chronological Newest to Oldest”. This way your new pins will go out right away.
I’d also change the When a pin is published setting to “Keep it on Source Board“. If you don’t make this adjustment, then each time Board Booster pins a pin, it removes it from your secret board. So after all pins have been pinned once, your board will be empty and pinning stops. That defeats the whole purpose of having an automated schedule. So change that to “Keep it on the Source Board” and your schedule will keep cycling.
Check for the best time to pin
Remember when we set up our new secret board and selected the “Basic” time setting? Well, once your schedule is running, BoardBooster will analyze activity on that board over the next few days and will determine the best times of day to pin to it.
When you have that info, you’ll want to go back into Board Booster, and edit that board so your pins go out around those times.
In Board Booster, click on Reports > Best Time to Pin.
Click the drop-down arrow below, and then select the board you want to check.
For this example, I’m using a different board than the one we created because that one is new and therefore doesn’t have any history.
As you can see above, the most activity on this particular board is at 10 AM. Then 11 AM, 2 PM, and 8 and 9 PM. So, now you’d want to go into your Board Booster scheduler, and make sure your pins go out around those times.
Here’s how to do that:
In Board Booster, click on Pinning Tools > Scheduler. Click on the board you want to edit.
Now click that little red icon that looks like a gear.
Below, we’re back at the Time Settings (where initially we selected Basic). Now I’ve selected Two Pinning Windows
Since the best time for this board was 10 AM, I selected 2 pins to go out between 10:00-10:15 AM.
Two other busy times were 8 PM and 9 PM so I’ll schedule two more for that window.
Again, you won’t be able to see the “Best time to Pin” until you pin for several days and Board Booster has time to analyze the history. So make sure that after you add a board in Board Booster, you go back a few days later and check the “Best Time to Pin” option. Then select your board and then adjust your pins to go out at the best possible times.
Believe me, it makes a difference.
Another option you may want to check if you’re looking for group board to join, is Reports > Top Group Boards. It’s an easy way to see the stats on multiple boards – like followers, re-pin rates, contributors and how many new pins per day for each board.
Two things to keep in mind:
- When you’re setting up a new board in BoardBooster, be aware of whatever rules the board owner states. If the board owner states that you can pin 3 times a day maximum, you don’t want to configure 6 or 7 per day.
- After you set up a schedule, it’s a good practice to check the group board over the next few days to see that your pins are appearing and that you’re not monopolizing the board.
So there you have a basic tutorial to get you started automating your pinning with Board Booster. Now, there are other cool features like Looping, and running customized campaigns, and even tribes. But this tutorial is aimed at getting your feet wet and getting your first schedule off the ground.
Should you sign up for BoardBooster?
It’s very possible to run a hobby blog in your spare time and manually pin to a handful of boards. But if your aim is to take your blog to a level where you’re making an income from it, that’s very hard without using a tool like BoardBooster.
Blogging itself isn’t rocket science. Some of the biggest income earners freely admit they’re not tech savvy at all. But what is hard is knowing where to spend your time so that you’re always getting the best return on investment. We all have a life, and not many people can sit and manually pin all day and night.
Pinning is easy, but to pin at the level where it’s going to drive a lot of traffic to your site will take a lot of time.
Two keys to being a successful blogger are:
- Knowing when to stop spending time on simple tasks and start using tools or outsourcing so you can focus on content or strategy.
- Consistency. Putting useful content out on a regular basis, and promoting it day after day.
Using a pin scheduler is probably one of the first times you’ll be faced with a situation like this. You can either spend massive amounts of time doing the simple task of pinning, or you can be brainstorming new content ideas, producing content or promoting your content.
